  1. One of the first benefits of a timetable is that it presumes there will be a schedule.   A schedule keeps the railway from attempting to have two trains occupying the same stretch of track at the same time.  Obviously that would be a problem if they were going different directions.   It also enables the railway to ensure that any drawbridges are down at appropriate times, which may be more of a concern in some places than others, but anywhere there is a drawbridge, it's going to be a factor.

Other than preventing accidents, schedules also allow passengers to estimate arrival times at their final destinations, and to plan any necessary train changes.  It also helps shippers of perishable goods determine how much refrigeration or other special care they need to plan for in packaging.

Railway timetables vary by the railway company.  Basically, you need to be able to understand 24 hour times, as most do not use "am/pm".  You need to understand their system of abbreviations for cities and stations.  You need to know how to check the legend on the schedule to ensure that the schedule you are looking at applies to the day you want; some trains run only on certain days of the week.
