I start my freshman year of college in about a month, and some of my lectures have optional discussions. The discussions are at different times, and are significantly smaller groups. What are the benefits of signing up for discussions? Will I learn more in the discussion than in the lecture?

  1. you get more involved. its far more interesting. and you learn alot more because it is easier to understand in discussion. rather than sitting back in lecture and falling asleep haha

  2. it all depends on your learning style. for me, personally, discussions help a lot because i can actively ask questions and get them immediately answered while during a lecture it's rude to interrupt and you have to sit through the entire thing before anything can be answered. also, discussions happen at your own pace.

  3. I think the discussions are actually a lot more helpful than the lectures. You have a smaller class and can go over the subject in a lot more detail. I know when I was in college, lectures just bored me and hard to follow. The TA's who run the discussion groups allow people to actually ask questions and get further in the material. Hope this helped.
