    That is a synthetic analogue of a hormone normallly produced by the kidney, and helps to stimulate the bone marrow to make red blood cells (aka erythrocytes)  

    It is often given to people who are anemic rather than give them a transfusion.  It is often used in to treat cancer patients who may get anemic after chemotherapy.
