Thunderstorms account for 47% of all rain in the eastern US and 70% in the southwestern US. (The absence of thunderstorms in 2005 in Illinois led to $2 billion in crop losses).

Lightning converts gaseous nitrogen into compounds essential to plants.

Lightning fixation accounts for 20% of the global total nitrogen deposited.

Thunderstorms maintain the global electrical circuit, transferring electrical charge from the atmosphere to the earth.

Thunderstorms also play an important role in the atmospheres chemistry with updrafts transporting pollutants aloft and storm rainfall removing vast amounts of pollutants from the air. So that's why the air smells so fresh after a thunderstorm!
