  1. Fortunately for us who live here, Vermont is a state where water is relatively plentiful and clean. As our state grows, however, water conservation will play an increasingly important role in protecting the health of our state’s lakes and streams and the safety of our drinking water supplies. We Vermonters can help safeguard our own health and the health of our neighbors by using less water. Water conservation improves septic system performance, which reduces the risk of groundwater contamination, and means less water gets diverted from streams. Water conservation also provides energy conservation savings as less electricity is needed to heat, pump and treat water.

Water conservation doesn’t mean we need to give up showering or washing our dishes. There are many simple ways to use less water around the home. For instance, 40 percent of all water used in the typical American home gets flushed down the toilet. Placing a plastic bottle filled with water or rocks as ballast in your toilet tank can save an average family of four more than 12,000 gallons of water in a year.

Don't put bricks in the tank, however, as they will deteriorate over time and possibly cause damage. Repairing a leaky faucet or toilet can also provide substantial water savings. A dripping faucet can waste up to 20 gallons of water a day; a leaking toilet up to 200 gallons a day. And here's a simple idea that many of us learned when we were kids but may have forgotten as adults: turning off the faucet while brushing your teeth. This can save you up to a gallon a day. That may not seem like much, but with more than half a million Vermonters brushing their teeth every day, that amounts to more than 200 million gallons in a year.
