  1. "The best" is a very subjective term. For instance if you were looking for "the best" as far as early hominid evolution in Africa were concerned, then I would probably have to give that credit to Rutgers University in New Jersey. This is not just because they have a solid curriculum like most other universities, but also because they currently hold the contract with National Museums of Kenya to hold an annual field school in Kenya and to conduct ongoing research in the Turkana region. It is one of the most highly respected field schools for this area of archaeology and this is one of the most active affiliates in the Great Rift Valley that is not controlled by the Leaky family. Seeing as going far in any area of academia is not just how smart you are but who you network with then being able to network with those who are the most active in any archaeological area is of a great benefit towards your future in that field. With this in mind, then your first question should be "what area of archaeology would I like to pursue?" Once you know that, then you can determine which field schools and/or proffessors who are the most active in those areas and likely are part of "the best" university for that field of archaeology!
