I am relocating, and I loved the neighborhood where the movie, "In the Land of Women" was filmed.

What are the best and worst neighborhoods to live in Vancouver? What is the average temp for winter and summer there?

  1. Never saw the movie, but as a former Vancouverite, I'd avoid the Main and Hastings (Chinatown/Gastown) area big time.  Best neighborhoods would likely be on the West Side: Oakridge, Kerrisdale, Kitsalano, etc., but they're pricey and even then you have to have locks and bolts.  Average temp for winter is about 45-47 degrees F (10 ish Celsius) and summer up to higher 80's, early 90's in extreme hot days, but being by the ocean, you'll have a lovely breeze.  It's the greatest city to live and work in, i think.  Wish i were still there...

  2. Worst the east side  Best Kitsalano  . west end . Its cheaper in the suburbs  We live in Metrotown  South Burnaby  $ 650..oo for  a 1 bedroom  cheaper inSurrey  and Delta . Winter mild not much snow  Summer  max about  80 f  Get a bus pass  tax deductable  . Medicare $ 54.00 one person hospistal free..  Gas to day Just under   $ 1.40 a liter  .    Go to tourismvancouver  hellobc  . The west end is g*y friendly  If thats of interest..lots of work forb skilled people . The Olympics are comming  .

  3. Worst neighbourhoods: Downtown Eastside, Chinatown, Gastown, Surrey

Best neighbourhoods: As people have already mentioned, Kisilano, and Point Grey are very nice areas, West Vancouver is a very nice, yet VERY expensive area to live. Shaunnesy Heights is Vancouver's Snob Hill, that or The British Properties in West Van.

Some nice neighbourhoods include North Vancouver, a little less ritzy then West Van, but still very nice. North Vancouver is a little s****. in the way that in most areas people with loud bikes, or lots of tattoo's etc. are not very welcome. It's a great place to raise a family.

Burnaby is ok, you have to do some research to find the best areas in Burnaby. The same goes for Richmond.

Yaletown is near Downtown and has lots of condos and apartments, no houses. There aren't many schools nearby, so it is not the best place to raise children.

Commercial Dr, close to the city centre is becoming the city's bohemian and arts centre, but it is not the nicest neighbourhood.

White Rock is another nice area, near the boarder and right on the ocean. Unfortunately, houses are very expensive. T

There are some nice areas in Coquitlam and New Westminster.

If you want to get further out of the city Clvoerdale, Langley, Aldergrove and Abbotsford are nice areas. Though they are a long commute to downtown, you can get a nice house and some acreage for about the same price as a condo downtown. The air quality in the Fraser Valley isn't the best, but it's no better then downtown.

Racially, Richmond and Surrey have very high Asian populations. Surrey has a very high Indian population, and therefore, some of the best Indian restaurants in the city. They have some trouble with gangs. North Vancouver and West Vancouver are mainly Caucasian, though there are quite a few Asian families. Langley etc is mostly Caucasian. Downtown is a mix of everything.

Downtown, Yaletown, Gastown and Chinatown have problems with the hosts of homeless people in the area. They are trying to figure out how to improve the problem before the Olympics.

If you are planning to move here, be prepared for high property taxes and expensive housing. Vancouver is not a cheap place to live.

Weather wise... During the summer it is usually around 20-30 C it rarely goes below -5 in the winter, usually it is around 0.

    Hope that helps.

Before you move, check out the Vancouver Sun for a few months. Look for local news, you'll be able to learn a lot about prospective neighbourhoods.

As well, look at a map of Vancouver so you can see the different areas I have mentioned.

  4. I'd say the most favourable is West Vancouver and the least favourable Downtown Eastside. The average summer temperature is in the 20 degrees celcius and the average winter temperature is around 0 degrees celcius.

  5. Average summer temp is usually around 25. It would probably get up to 36 barely any higher. Winters it can get down to -10 if it's a really cold night but usually around -1 in average. Almost always either raining or cloudy.

The best neighbourhoods are West End near UBC. Meaning West of Main street all the way to UBC and all the way up to downtown. West Vancouver are also pretty high end places. North Vancouver is also good with midclass families.

The more you go East from main street, the worst the neighbourhoods get with more breakins, or car theft. Most drug related crimes are in Downtown East side which is East of Downtown Vancouver. North of Main street. Maple Ridge, Langley, New West and Coquitlam are not as good as Vancouver since there's nothing out there except a few stores, but it's good to live there if you don't mind the commute to Vancouver. But in comparison all cities in the region are dead after dark except Vancouver.

  6. Avoid the downtown east side. Try living close to English Bay or in Yaletown. In the winter it's about 5 degrees celcius, and the summer usually around 20 but so far this summer it's cold.
