  1. The higher the amperage the better.  check for a number like 2500 mah or something like that.  cameras need quick bursts of power.  Batteries are rated in volts and amps.  Volts x Amps = Watts.  More Watts = happy camera

  2. 1.  You have to get one that works with your camera.  It has to be the same shape and size and type of connection.  It also has to be the same volts (like 3.6V or 1.5V).

    2.  Shutterbug gave you a slightly misleading answer.  650mAh is not current, it's energy.  A 1300mAh battery will last twice as long as a 650mAh battery because it holds twice the energy.

    3.  Lithium ion batteries are the best (with today's mass market technology) but they don't replace ordinary AA batteries.  Lithium ion and lithium are NOT the same!

    4.  Nickel metal hydride batteries can replace ordinary AA batteries.  I don't remember how they compare to other similar batteries.

  3. If the manufacturer guarantees against consequential damage to your camera, that should be worth a few cents extra on the price of batteries. Cheaper brands tend to leak more often.
