my friend is looking to buy a car/SUV soon...

she plans on buying.. not leasing.. and she hopes to own her car for many years

she of course, wants it to be good on gas

hwoever, ive read many articles saying that hybrid vehicles.. the battery in them or something only lasts 7-10 years.. and if she were to buy a used car , it might not last as long as she needs

so my question.. what are the best gas saving cars/SUVS that arent hybrid?

thanks so much

  1. First, don't buy an SUV. Price of gas will continue to rise so an SUV will depreciate alot faster and soon will worth close to nothing if she ever decides to sell it because people won't want them anymore. Good reliable cars that are fuel efficient are: Honda Accord & Civic, Toyota Corolla & Camry, Minicooper, Ford Focus, Nissan Altima & Sentra. My personal choice would be the Altima. They changed the body style in 2007 which looks really good, interior is very nice & roomy, and drives great.

  2. Toyota Camery is a really nice car. Good looks, good ride, great handeling, and of course, good gas. People always compare it to the accord, but it blows the Accord away in my opinion.

Don't truse american automakers? The Ford Fusion is right up there with the j*p cars in reliability, plus it handles better the mercedes c-class. (so i've heard, i read car and driver and they loved it)

SUV? When you say "good on gas" the term SUV doesn't come to mind. Definatly avoid small SUVs, (ford escape, honda crv, toyota rav4) they are really small and expensive and really don't get good mpg. Something big like the Honda Pilot gets pretty good mpg for the size, but it still uses alot.

Maybe you could wait until the bmw 3-series diesel comes out. I've heard it gets mpg in the high 30s, and best of all, it's a bmw so it will be a blast to drive and all your friends will be envious.

If you really don't need space, mini cooper maybe? or honda fit? civic? Toyota Carolla? As gas prices soar, car makers are making more small cars then ever so as time goes on there will probably be more and more gas savers on the market.

  3. A lot of the Hondas get good gas mileage, like the 1988 Honda CRX HFgets over 50mpg, and so does the 1995 Honda Civic Hatchback.

If your looking for a newer car, then go with the 2005 Honda Civic LX, it gets over 40 mpg, and it isn't a hybrid. Hondas also hold their value very well.

Don't get an SUV or truck unless you need to tow something heavy with it, because they all get bad gas mileage.
