What are the best charities that benefit animals?

The Animal Sanctuary in UT is supposed to be the very best, helping animals of all kinds from any state.

"Best" is relative.

For instance, a no-kill animal shelter takes in unwanted animals and tries to find them homes, but animal advocacy groups encourage people to spay and neuter their pets so that animals don't end up in shelters. Which is "best"? It depends on your point of view.

I prefer to donate to advocacy efforts, because while I laud animal-care initiatives, I want the problems of dog and cat over-population and circus animals to be addressed. But maybe you are more concerned with wildlife, and want to help protect endangered species.  

So, what the "best" charities are that benefit animals is entirely relative.
