August 12 is the official start of the Perseids meteor shower, but it will be best viewed after midnight of the 12th and into the early morning of the 13th....from about 12:30 AM till 2:30 AM . You're wasting your time unless you get far away from any artificial lights of any kind.

They are expected to average about one a minute....which is average for a meteor shower.http://stardate.org/nightsky/meteors/

it's not an all-or-nothing thing. the nominal peak is the 12th at 0500 utc, but it's a broad peak, and a day or two either way won't be a major issue.

as always, observe toward dawn. teh moon will have set by then too.
