What are the best directions to go from fort lee, nj (near palasaides ave.) to the lincoln tunnel?

right now we are going to 95 via route 5, but it seems out of the way. looking at the map, i'm wondering about taking Route 1 - 9 to the tunnel entrance. We are new in the area and figure there must be some shortcuts we are unaware of. Thanks so much!
