  1. A good site to check out is http://www.domainnamepricer.com which basically compares the cost of buying a domain name from a large list of well known registrars.  Currently Netfirms and 1and1.com and GoDaddy (for .us) seem to have the best prices for the best known TLDs (Top-Level Domains -- ie. .com, .net, .org, .us, .info).

Some things to look out for are:

-Sale or promotional prices -- these prices generally are only for the first year you have the domain name.  After that the price may jump up quite a bit.  For example, currently Netfirms has a $5.95 promotion on .com, .net and .org domains, while their *regular* price is $9.95.  This likely means that if you got a domain through Netfirms the price would jump from $5.95 in the first year to $9.95 every year after

-Domain 'Stealing': Some unsavory registrars may spy on your domain 'test' searches on their website and may snap them up before you have a chance to purchase them yourself.  GoDaddy CEO Bob Parsons has been quite outspoken on a related practice known as Domain Kiting - where registrars snap up domain names (likely from your searches) and put up ads on the domain and then drop them (i.e. they don't pay anything) if the domain doesn't generate traffic -- you can read up on this practice here http://www.bobparsons.tv/DomainKiting.ht...

Personally I use 1and1.com for most of my domain purchases as the have consistently cheap retail (not sale) prices -- they are also no fly-by-night -- being the largest hosting company in the world I believe.  For .co.uk domains I use Telivo.com and for .ca domains I use Netfirms.com

  2. Use godaddy.com

  3. I think the cheapest and most reliable domain name registrar is godaddy. Go to rmbdomains.com/affiliates for links to my favorite domain name registrars.

  5. Don't get tricked by the cheapest. For example, GoDaddy appears to be inexpensive, but it doesn't include private domain registration - a $6.99 option (which prevents others and spammers from getting information about you). Netfirms is a good, reputable place to register your domain for $5.95 and it does include private domain registration:
