Question:

What are the best golf clubs for me?

I'm 6'5", quite fit, currently a 9 handicap. I try to swing like Els..smooth and under control. I have no consistent pattern of fade or draw. Sometimes I will snap off a duck hook. I'm wondering about shaft flex, loft and any other variables. Any suggestions?

  1. it all depends on what you like

  2. The best golf clubs for you are the ones that fit your game the best. You also have to like how they look, how they feel, etc... It's a very personal choice.

Like many others here, I would recommend getting fitted for your clubs. I am partial to Golfsmith, where you can spend all the time you want trying out almost any club on the market. Please also note that they have an option to get you custom fit to a club you like including length and lie customizations that fit you precisely.

Also, getting the right clubs for your swing won't mask your faults, it will expose them. When you have clubs that fit you, you'll start noticing your mistakes more and they will give you the correct feedback to know how to fix them. Just try to get into a club that is a little bit better than you are, so you can get better and not outgrow them.

Also, unless you play like 2 times a year, stay away from the Super Game-Improvement irons. Those WILL mask imperfections in your swing, so you won't be able to improve as easily. Also, a series of lessons after getting your new clubs will get you started on the right path to using your sticks well.

As far as the specifics of your question:

    1. Shaft Flex - if you are fit and can swing the club quickly, using a stiff or x-stiff shaft flex will reduce the distance you hit the ball, but normally will also reduce your margin of error.

    2. Loft - there is no standard loft in the industry. The most important factor here is to have a good, regular difference in the lofts of your irons and wedges. It doesn't really make a big difference (strategy-wise) if your 9 iron has 44 degrees of loft or 40. The big factor is that you should have 4 degrees difference in your short and mid irons and about 3 degrees difference in your long irons. This will give you good, predictable yardage gaps in your clubs.

  3. I think you need to consult a pro, i think that at edwin watts golf shops they have a program that will put on a machine and you hit a variety of clubs and it measures the flex you need, the length and any types of different variables for your clubs.

I went to my golf pro at my club, he put me on a machine and I always played stiff flex shafts; however after this lesson, I switched to reg flex, my shafts were shortened and they also bent all my irons 1 degree strong, now I am playing much better golf, better ball flight and get alot more distance.

  4. The best thing to do would be go to a driving range which allows you to try different clubs - then you can get a feel of which types you like best.

In my opinion the Callaway Big Bertha set are by far the easiest to play with and the driver is very forgiving so you can easily hit long shots when mishitting.

  5. DO NOT spend a nickel on new golf clubs, honestly. You are not going to see a drop of a single stroke by getting this shaft or that driver, etc. etc...

If you TRULY want to get better at golf then make a commitment to find a good teaching pro and get one lesson every single week for...1 year, 10 years, infinity???

The only thing the "right" clubs are going to do for you is to mask the swing problems that you have. Good luck.

  6. At your height, you will probably need custom clubs anyways, so I would suggest asking a pro.

  7. Wilson or Calloway
