Germany is full of history and does not only consist of Bavaria, lol.

You could, for example go on a fairy tale trip from Hanau (Hesse) to Bremen on the so-called Märchenstraße http://www.deutsche-maerchenstrasse.com/...

Besides that, almost every bigger city in Germany has lots of historical places, eg. Dresden (Saxony) that has been destroyed during WW2 and been rebuilt ever since, Berlin (especially the rest of the Berlin Wall) to remember the division of Germany till 1989, Frankfurt/Main (esp. the so-called Römer), Heidelberg (a really nice little University-town with a beautiful castle), Rostock (one of the eldest universities in Europe), the Wartburg (just in case you know Luther), and many more.

Every region here in Germany has it's own history, it would be helpful if you could write what you're interested in. Do you want to visit sites of German History, do you want to see castles (we have lots of them all over Germany), would you like to visit historical little towns in Germany or what?

I think that if you are looking to visit 'historical' sites in Germany, you almost have to take a tour up the Nekar river.  Strarting with Heidelberg, and ending in Heilbronn, this part of Germany is loaded with history.  First of course is the city of Heidelberg itself (which, unfortuately has become very Americanized), with the University of Heidelberg, the Heidelberg castle, and historic downtown.  Then, driving up the Nekar toward Heilbronn, there are historical villages and castles at almost every turn.  This was the main route that Napolean and his armies took on their way to Russia.  You end this tour with a trip to the very, very historical Gutenberg Castle and then end the afternoon with a visit to the historical town of Bad Wimpfen.  This town is so famous in Germany that is one of the places in Germany  that the Germans visit as tourists.

I lived in Germany for almost seven years and this was one of the 'must see' tours that I took my friends and family on whenever they came over to visit.

Hi there.    I used to go the Frankenstein's Castle in Damstadt.  That was really cool. Open all the time especially at Halloween.  I also like to visit Berlin.  I graduated from Stuttgart High School.  I like travel all over.

BERCHTESGARDEN is on the Austria/Germany border and is a place that truly deserves a visit. There are many tiny villages around Berchtesgarden that you should also plan to see. Another must-see in this area is the largest NATIONAL PARK in Germany - a stunning area. You can also visit the eagle's nest where Hitler used to spend time. FOTO PANORAMA GERMANIA. In other words, bring a camera.

KOENIGSEE (the Lake of Kings) is an intense blue color and in the shape of a fjord, surrounded by cliffhanging rock formations and extends for 8 kilometers. You must take a boat ride across the lake and a visit the baroque chapel and the hunting lodge of St. Bartholomew. In the background you can see the Watzmann Mountain. The top is one of the highest peaks and is known to be one of the most dangerous climbs of the Alps.

MARKTSCHELLENBERG - mountain resort at the foot of the UNTERBERG mountain - the subject of many legends. The main attraction is the ice grotto - the tour lasts at least three hours!! It is the most famous grotto in Germany. From the waterfalls there are many possible nature walks and hikes through the woods overlooking the village. We recommend the KUEGELMUEHLE restaurant at the foot of the mountain.

THE CASTLES...

The Bavarian region was divided into many small fiefdoms and counties, which gave it the title of "Land of the castles." In fact, there are more than one hundred castles and almost all of them offer guided tours every hour.

Schloss Herrenchiemsee is a castle built on an island in the Chiemsee lake. Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, built it to copy the grand Chateau of Versailles outside Paris.

Schloss Linderhof in Ettal was another whim of King Ludwig (who was quite mad about castles). It is smaller than others he built but no less pompous or grand. It is set amidst the Bavarian forests of Oberammergau (where the Passion play is done). From the bedroom Ludwig could see the artifical falls - the focal point of the garden. The kitsch "Grotto of Venus" with artificial stalagtites is worth visiting.

Burghausen is on the border of Austria and is the longest castle in Europe. The town of Burghausen extends for a kilometer and encloses a small town or hamlet, which was so solid that it was able to resist every kind of outside incursion. The Castle as you see it today dates from 1200. Under impending threat from the enemy, Four thousand workers constructed this fortress, which kept the population safe during the Thirty Year's war. At the foot of Burghausen lies a charming hamlet with pastel colored houses that are typical of Bavaria.

Burg Traunitz lies among these hills and is known for its staircase. Also, It is known because King George II published the official rules for making beer.

Schloss Neuschwanstein without a doubt the most famous castle in Bavaria. This castle was also built by Ludwig II, and it dates from the middle of the 19th century. It is located on the River Altmuhl, and you can enjoy a magnificent view from the riverside while from the courtyard you can see an incredible panorama of the Altmuhltal, one of the finest valleys of Germany. The amazing mix of styles of this castles make it an outstanding structure and create an unreal and romantic impression. Even its location (high on a mountainpeak in the middle of the green forests) contributed to its nickname of "The castle of the fairy tales."
