  1. The best brand would probably be Dell! But first of all Vista is very buggy and hogs most of the memory from the computer which slows it down in the first place! I would use Windows XP!

  2. If it's new I'd try burning anything important to CD and running the recovery disc (or call the manufacturer to find out how to activate the recovery mode).  Recovery will erase EVERYTHING and put the computer back how it was when you purchased it.

Here are some other things that can cause your computer to run slow:

-Vista Aero (Vista uses a lot of resources to make it look "nice")

-Fragmented drive (Vista should defragment automatically once a week if you don't turn off your computer - look for defrag, you can make it run on-demand though)

-Temp Files/Cookies (in IE go to Tools>Delete browsing history and click "Delete All")

-Corrupt disk (this says XP but it's the same directions http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265)

I had a relative who'se computer was insanely slow and all it needed was to run check-disk...it was hundreds of times faster after that.

NOTE: When you run check-disk, if your computer "gets stuck" at a certain percent and the HD light isn't on or blinking, restart and press F8 quickley, then lit it start in safe-mode...it'll run the check-disk without crashing but just won't tell you the percent complete.  I had this until I upgraded to Vista SP1.

  3. First, there is no such thing as the best kind of computer. All computers have their advantages and disadvantages, depending on what you are looking for. Bleeding edge technology may be great for gamers, but a massive price tag and possible hardware and software incompatibility can be a problem. If you're just a 'net and e-mail kind of person, a few hundred dollars can get you a fitting computer.

Second, Vista is indeed a memory hog. It wants at least 1 GB of RAM, and 2 GB is recommended. There should be several options to turn off some of the eye candy in vista, depending on the version, which could significantly increase the speed of your computer.

Third, there are several ways to attack the possibility of having viruses. You can purchase or download various anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit, and anti-malware programs, and run them to see if your computer is indeed infected.

Fourth, if anything that does not use the internet for functionality is running at a satisfactory speed (Off-line games, Office Suite programs, etc), but things affiliated with your internet connection (your browser, on-line games, etc) seem to be slow, consider changing to a different ISP (internet service provider). Dial-up is notoriously slow, and DSL is still much slower than cable connections.

Ultimately, checking for malware is of the first priority, beyond a quick check of how much memory (RAM) you have. Turn off the eye-candy, don't open a million things at once, and consider a faster internet connection. Hope I could help. Good luck! :)
