I will be staying by St. Peter's Square and would like to venture to the Forum, The Colosseum, and the other historic areas without paying for a guided tour.

  1. Metro

  2. Rome has a two line hop on hop off bus.  The buses offer a 72 hour pass and a great cheap way to get around the city.  They cover all the hot spots and run late into the evening.  And because there are 2 lines they get across the city in really good time

  3. you must be really careful for pickpockets on buses and the tube.

the whole city isnt very big compared to other capitals, but central Rome is actually very big compared to other city centers. so you can't really walk to all the sights.

but you can walk to many !

taxis are not so cheap. buses are slow and always packed with people and thieves.

the metro is ok. but there's only a few lines.

  4. Whatever you do...

When crossing the street...wait for a group of Nuns to cross with...drivers in Rome don't stop for pedestrians the way they do here...

Nuns are the ONLY ones they stop for...this from experience when I was last there...Taxis are fairly cheap...the drivers are insane, though...

  5. ...moped if you want to get struck and killed in traffic,

subway if you like the smell of sewers, bus if you want to be squeezed between two strange men who think it's their right to feel all over you...or you could walk, just make sure you have a male escort because the strange men who think it's their right to feel all over you are out in the streets, too

  6. vespa

  7. public transportation are ok, from st peters there are many bussse, if you have few time from roma termini bus station  starts turistic bus with a speaker and you can see best of rome, not much expencie.

If you want to know exatly how to go from a place to another , time and map, visit

    www.atac.roma.it,

public trasportation site, you'll find "calcola il percorso" not difficoul even if you don't speak Italian.

  8. Ciao it is very easy to use public transportation in Rome.

From St Peters there is a bus 64 that takes you to Piazza Venezia (and here you walk to the Colosseum and all the city centre.

the web site of Atac.Roma.it are only in italian but you can check with a map all the transportation of Rome city centre.

I suggest you when you are there to take a daily ticket and when you are tired (walking) you jump on the first bus, take a place and see this wonderful city!!!

    Have a nice trip!

    ciao

  9. Steal a wild horse driven chariot would be the best bet.

Drive them like the clappers over the cobble stone areas of road.....it'll be better than sitting on the washing machine on full spin.

  10. I have usually walked the route when I've been in Rome. However, there are hop-on, hop-off tour buses that cover the sites or you can get single or multiple day passes for the public transportation system that are good for both the metro and bus system.

The tour bus is good because the route covers all the major sites. A two day ticket is 10 euro. The buses run every 25 minutes. http://www.rexervation.com/mappa_tour_ot...

  11. renting a little scooter (motorized bike) is not bad if you want to be able to get through traffic

  12. well rome is not big as new york of course so once you arrived in the center(piazza del popolo, piazza di spagna etc.)you can easily walk everywhere you want.when i go to rome i usally use the subway,is quite reliable and i takes you everywhere but you have to beware of pickpockets....if you have a bag carry it not on your back but on your chest!!using bus is also good but i usually use subway cause i think it is more confortable(there's a train every 5 minutes so if there is too much crowd in a train you can take the next).it's important to have a map with subways stations and bus stop.once you have a map it's easy to do anythin you want.

  13. The Taxi and the bus system isnt bad, the subways can be not so reliable and crowed, watch for gypsies in subways, "pickpockets"

  14. Gondola

  15. i think that buses are the best way to move in roma for a tourist. i just suggest you to avoid rush hours (7-10 a.m.; 12:30-2:30 pm and 5:30-6:30 p.m.). Don't take subway, because it's too crowdy and it only has 2 lines. There should also be a public touristic bus. for furthere information check the public transportation site of Rome (unfortunately is only in Italian) http://www.atac.roma.it/

  16. Everything is in walking distance.take a bus if you really have to.

  17. you should walk things arent so far apart from each other! its the best way to see the city & trains & buses are great also.. you will get pickpocketed if you are careless like anywhere in the world!

  18. you can take the public transportation

believe me is real nice Roma is not that big

  19. I guess you  could hop on the back of my motorized scooter

  20. A few years ago, I rented an apartment near St. Peter's and walked absolutely everywhere -- the colosseum, the forum, piazza del popolo, piazza navona (my fave), many churches, palazzo corsini, musei capitolini, etc.  When it rained, I simply hopped on a city bus and rode it for a while.  The only place I didn't walk to was villa borghese.

  21. walk......best way to get around plus loose pasta calories...

  22. if you are really near st peter you can walk to the major attractions (some hotels and b&b thay say are near st. peter but they are not really...)

ou don't need to take a taxi (thay are expensive), metro and buses can easily take you everywhere. there is a metro station near the vatican

    ciao
