The choices are overwhelming. It seems everyone has a cool and unique name for a mobile phone... Instinct, Dare, and so on.

Right now I have a regular Sprint phone and my contract is almost up.

I might stick with Sprint. Also, are mobile phone practical for surfing the web? Mainly I am interested in reading news articles when I am away from my desktop. Thanks.

  1. You don't need a cell phone to access the internet, you could use a dedicated data modem like the Sprint Compass 597, attached directly to a laptop, enabling you full internet access:

if you have multiple devices that need internet access, consider operating the Compass 597 attached to an "EVDO router" like the PHS300, which then allows anything to connect to the internet using WiFi.

FYI, for those folks who travel a lot and want high speed "3G" internet access while on the road for their laptops or their gadgets like an Apple iPhone or iPod Touch, or a Sony PSP/Mylo/PS3, or Nintendo Wii/DS or Nokia 770/800/810 tablet, an Archos 605 WiFi, or even the Chumby... take a look at this article:

its also a good way to get "3G" speeds on any iPhone! and faster than AT&T!

Getting back to your actual question, one really good cellphone choice that does what you want (and can work with a cradlepoint router) is the Sprint BlackBerry 8830:

if you need more info about using EVDO for internet access anywhere there is cell phone coverage, check out this article:
