  6. 1.) Antonio's

Purok 7, Barangay Neogan, Tagaytay City, Cavite

    Tel Number: (046) 413-09-75

Setting: The restaurant is chalet-like, built on a ridge with a fabulous view of the hills and vallyes. You can choose to be seated in a tented dining hall among trees and koi ponds or in the more formal dining room *** porch. There are very few, if any 5 star eating places with an ambiance like this.

FOOD: every entree comes with a salad from their herb and vegetable garden and a soup of the day. If you're really hungry, there are 14 more appetisers you can choose from, of which the Pate de Foie Gras with Crostini and the Raclette dish are particularly good. You cannot possibly go wrong with any of the 17 entrees, but a perennial favorite and possibly the best cooked steak available anywhere at any price is Chef Tony Escalante's Grilled Certified Angus Prime rib Eye Steak. The SOle Muniere with Fried Gnocchi is the closest you will come locally to the classic French way of preparing this dish. Apart from this there are other fine entrees included in the menu like the duck, the house speciality Spanferckel a whole roasted boneless stuffed pig.

Wine: The well chosen list is a two pager. Wines areserved in large Riedel like excellent stemware. Try the well priced crane lake Chardonnay, which seems to be available only here.

Service: Excellent. The staff know exactly what to do and go about their work in a flowing manner that isn't easy, particualrly when you consider that venue's multilevel topography.

Price: When you go through all this effort and expense just to have a meal, you have to ask yourself if it will be worth it. Antonio's will forever alter your expectations and standards for other restaurants. It is that good.

    2.) Cafe on the Ridge

No. 60 Aguinaldo Highway, Tagaytay City, Tel # 886-43-25

Setting: The restaurant has floor to ceiling windows overlooking the spectacular Taal Volcano. Its Filipiniana cultural show is very popular with tourists and balkbayan who avail themselves of the buffet lunch on weekends. The hotel also ofers regular Baile dance performers and acoustic entertainment on Saturdy nights.

Food: Cafe on the Ridge offers international buffet dishes for breakfast daily, lunch on weekends, and dinner on saturdays. Its signature dishes include crispy tawilis, smoked tanguingue, gambas al ajillo, paella, bulalo, and the shellfish platter. not to be missed is the Taal Chocolate Eruption made of soft rich chocolate cake oozing with chocolate cream sauce served with vanilla ice cream - definitely worth the 15 minute wait since the cake us baked upon being ordered.

Wine:A developoing wine list provides a number of complements to the meal. The restaurant offers wines from Australia, Spain, and a few more from France, Italy, Chile, and the United States.

Service: A professional Team headed by the F & B manager Ruben Alcoriaza is very knowledgeable and accomodating. Service is attentive and unobtrusive.

Price:Reasonable, considering the setting, entertainment, and quality of the food.

  7. I'd say Josephine's.  Breakfast at Antonio's ranks second for me.  Both have a great view of Taal Volcano and Taal Lake.
