  1. Englishgarten, Deutsch Museum, Marienplatz

  2. Hofbrau haus for the beer and history.

  3. Must go to places:

St. Peter's Basilica - big pretty church with two big towers.  you've probably seen photos of it.

Glockenspiele - For all practical purposes a gaint coo-coo clock, but very famous and worth a look

The Deutsche Museum - home to V2 rockets and modern industrial engines, if its technology related and has anything to do with Germany you can see an exhibit on it here.  Awesome museum.

Hoffbrauhaus - giant bier hall that recreates bierfests every day of the year.  even if there is no fest going on the atmosphere inside is that of a bier tent with singing umpaa bands, bier sold by the liter, and general drunken merriness.

  4. I would recommend starting with a tour of the city with a bus...  It's relatively cheap, and very informative.  You learn a bit about the city and its layout and its history, and they point out a lot of museums along the way if that is your thing.  I would also recommend checking out the 'Viktualienmarkt' which is right next to the 'Marienplatz' and is a big out-door food market, where you can buy all kinds of food (especially fruits and veggies) all year long.  I would also recommend asking people while there what all there is to see- if you're lucky, you'll meet some really nice people who will tell you the best things....  I would also recommend trying to find the 'Assam Kirche'.  It is a tiny little church in a row of buildings, so most people walk right by.  But, inside, EVERYTHING is statues and decoration.  It is way cool.  In the area, reachable by train, is Dachau, which used to be a concentration camp.

Please bear in mind though, München is one city in Germany.  What is expirienced there, is München.  Other cities are very different, but just as cool.

  5. Some of my favourites are:

    Koenigsplatz

    English Garden

    Marienplatz

    Deutsches Museum

    Oktoberfest

It depends on what you're interested in. There are plenty of attractions, museums, bars, restaurants, parks, etc.

  6. Be sure to visit Marienplatz to see the Glockenspiel at the city hall when it goes off. It's a good show. There are interesting shops, fountains and museums on the walk from Carls Gate (Karlstor) to the Marienplatz.

The outdoor market is close by and worth a visit.

The Frauenkirche and St Peter's (Alter Peter) are both good places to visit. The tombs of the Bavarian kings are in the church as well as some spectacular art. St. Peter's also has a lot of old masterpieces. You caqn go up in the tower to enjoy the view. Michaelskirche also has tombs of Bavarian rulers, and the facade is particularly nice.

Visit the Hofbrauhaus or one of the other beer halls. If you're there in late September, go to Octoberfest.

There are several museums worth seeing at the Residenz. The treasury is particularly good if you're only going to see one. On the way see the national theater.

Take the tram and go visit Nymphenburg Palace. Be sure to walk the grounds here. The gardens, sculpture, and fountains are worth seeing.

Then there's Schleissheim Old and New Palaces and Lustheim Palace which are all in the same complex. The porcelain collection at Lustheim is impressive. While you're there, stop in the beer garden.

There are several worthwile day trips that leave from Munich. The one to Obergammerau, Schloss Linderhof, and Neuschwanstein Castle is particularly good. You can also take the train to Fussen and then the bus from the train station to get to the Neuschwanstein and Schwangau castles. The hike up the the bridge over the waterfall is not easy but rewarded with great views. You can avoid the hike by taking the shuttle.

Munich has a lot of other things to see and do. Have a great time!
