You HAVE to take the ferry past the seals to go to Garnish Island. That's in Glengarriff itself.

You can go to Blarney Castle. The castle itself and its famous stone are actually less interesting than the ancient druidic stone circle and corbel hut on the same site. It has an atmosphere that you usually only find in the big Gothic cathedrals, especially if you go in the morning, with not too many other tourists around. They are both east of Glengarriff, along the coast. Then there is Youghal (pronounce:"Yawl"!) another lovely coast town.

One of the  loveliest places anywhere is the small village of Garryvoe, unless they have destroyed it in the meantime with bungalows and housing estates like so much of Ireland. At the other side of the bay is Ballycotton, a very picturesque little town, where the Americans used to go for filming.

The trip in the Kerry direction ("wesht a piece" as they say in West Cork) is beautiful too, so are Kinsale  and Cobh.

If you want night life (kind of) like discos etc. you'd have to go to Cork City, and if you feel like a longer trip go to Bunratty castle near Shannon airport with its folkpark. Quite touristy, but it gives you a peek into the life of rural Ireland up until the second world war.

I have lived there for 12 years and I loved it there. I am hoping to go back one day. England is probably the best place to visit, it's only a boat ride away.

Garnish Island is amazing, especially in good weather.

Glengarrif, County Cork. Very pretty place, but it's much easier to get around by car or by bike. I don't think large coaches can go to most places nearby.

You're close to Bantry and you're on the edge of the Beara Peninsula, which is a truly spectacular location. Go to Adrigole and turn right, go up the mountains to the Healy Pass, the Cork and Kerry border, and if you have good weather you'll get some magnificent photos. You'll be looking across the inlet to the Ring of Kerry.

Or you could go right to the end of the peninsula, out of Garnish Point, and take the cable car over to Dursey Island. The cable car is the only way onto the Island, I believe.

You could also stop at the village of Allihies, see the old copper mine shafts, and go on around to Eyries, take the road slowly on to Kenmare.

A word of warning though - some of the beaches have treacherous currents, and are not safe for swimming. The beaches themselves are lovely.
