Suppose a mutual fund or ETF focused on oil and gas exploration.  You could find the list of stocks that the fund holds.  THEN you could choose stocks from that list, comparing earnings history, quality of management, etc.

For comparison, did you realize that Cleveland Cliffs increased 48 fold in 5 years?

I like MDU Resources (NYSE:MDU).  Besides the Bakken E&P activity, they are a regulated electric and natural gas utility, and also involved in the nation's infrastructure rebuilding (owns sand & gravel, asphalt companies in Calif, Texas and elsewhere) and has a division that builds and repairs electric power transmission lines.

They may not be the "Next hot stock" but I prefer the more stable "slow and steady growers.  Like that "Saturday Night Live" character said about baseball,  this stock has been verrry verrry good to me.
