I run Cross Country and the only brand I ever liked was Saucony. They are way more comfortable than a generic brand like Nike. I don't know how to put a picture in here so here's a link to a picture of a Saucony shoe.

There are different types of running shoes. You need to decide what you need them for, i.e. distance, surface, weather, etc. You also need to consider how your foot is shaped and how you place your feet when running. You should get a good advice at a running store.

Probably the best online source of information is runnersworld.com.

I personally prefer shoes from Asics, and my favorite model is GT2xxx.

Its best to go to a specialty running store and get fitted according to your foot type, gait, pronation, etc.  They will be the BEST running shoes for you.

What works the best for me is Brook Adrenaline, they are a nuetral shoe, with cushioning and narrow fit for my feet, great for road running.  Trails, I use Nike Ascend, they are just okay.  I have tried many different shoes such as Mizunos, Nike, Sauconys, Brooks and Asics.  The winner for me was Brooks and Mizunos.  This could be completely different for you.
