What are the best schools in new zealand?

we are planning on emigrating to NZ when our little boy is 5 (before he starts school) and would appreciate any advice on good schools.cheers.

every school has it's good and bad ^^ big schools are very nice though!!!! ^^ but since he is only 5.. mm... any school really ^^ i suggest you go to south island!!! ^^ way cooler!! hehe and when he reaches college and uni, go to auckland!! ^^

It greatly depends on the are you are in. For instance, in Howick, you have Owairoa, Cockle Bay and Star of the Sea primary schools which are decile 10 and very well regarded. You also have MacCleans college which is a brilliant public school. Yet merely 10 minutes away you have Howick College which is...not. In general if you are going for public schools, look at the decile system - decile 10 is brilliant, decile 1 is to be avoided if at all possible.

However, it is also very much a good idea to ask around... word of mouth tends to be very blunt and truthful when it comes to schools!

It also depends on your child... If you think they are going to need that extra motivation and discipline, then go for private. If your child has good self motivation and a good attitude to learning, you will be fine with public as long as the school has good resources.

I would try Hereworth - it is a very prestigious boys school situated in Havelock North , Hawkes Bay . It is a 'private school' and once he finishes his time there , no doubt he will attend Lindisfarne College - it is also private and situated in Hastings , Hawkes Bay .

Hi~for a 5yrs old boy, I think almost all NZ primary schools are good.  In Auckland, the Howick, Pakurague, Remuera, Epson district I recommend you to consider.

Certainly, you need live in the area only, then your boy is able to attend the school you like.  

In the beginning, you need rent a house in the area you want and have the rential agreement to apply the school.

Most schools in NZ are good. Try in Wellington. Got good colleges and schools which are doing top in academic and sports in the country. Also all the main centres are good like Auckland, Christchurch and Canterbury.

Most schools  in NZ are very good, they have to have fairly high standards or else they lose pupils and funding from Govt.Depending on where you live some schools for boys that are good are Southwell in Hamilton, Dilworth in Auckland, St. Martins (mixed) in Christchurch or any of a host of state schools throughout the country.

I have to say that you are getting some REALLY weird advice !  Dilworth (in Auckland) is a private school for boys from low income families whose parents are separated or one parent is dead.  And Havelock North ????  Why would you live in the middle of nowhere to go to a totally average school !

If you pick a nice area there should be a reasonable state school around - i.e. on the Hibiscus Coast of Auckland or in the Central or Eastern Bays Suburbs of Auckland.  I would reccommend going to the Education Review Office's website, www.ero.govt.nz  - look at the suburbs that you want to live in and check what the school is like.

In terms of private schools, I only know of Auckland but it would basically be Kings prep or St. Kentigerns prep.  Private (parents pay) schools in New Zealand are relatively cheap - about $10,000 to $15,000 a year.  However a lot of parents who are wealthy and can afford it choose to send their children to state schools until their children are 11 or 13.

If you can't afford a private school, do check out the high schools on the ERO website as well as state schools in New Zealand are zoned and zoning makes a big difference.

You don't say where in New Zealand you plan to live. There are some excellent public schools in all parts of New Zealand, and you will get just as good an education at the good public schools as a private school. The public schools that fall short can depend on many factors - what we call the decile which is a number 1- 10 giving an idea of how financially well off the area is. That is not to say some lower decile schools are not good.

There are also a number of private schools( note we call schools parents pay usually a substantial amount for their children to attend , private schools) and government run are public schools.

The principal of a school has a big impact on how good the school is so it is generally a good idea to ask people who have children attending how they find it.

We also have a lot of Catholic schools which are integrated into the public system but do charge small fees and have a religious part to their curriculum.

depends where you are going to live in n z ,, nz has a very good education system, many very good public and private school through the country,  kids gone to the school  zone area , meaning  that where you live,,,so it pays to get in to a nice area , and then a good school there,,are you from the u k ,,   look luck

All Schools in NZ are good it just depends on whether the student is willing to learn & take up all the oportunities that the School offers.
