I'm going to Rome in October for 4 days. What do you think would be the best things to see or do while I'm there?

  1. Depends on what kinds of things you are interested in. Of course the Vatican is to see, and if you are there while Papa-razzi (Pope Ratzinger) is there, you should go and see him give mass. Climb to the top of the Cupolone, if you have time. Some other interesting things to see that are a bit unusual are:

    1) the catacombs, the ancient underground burial sites for Christians

    2) the Capuchin Crypt beneath the Capuchin Church of the Immaculate Conception (1645), located on Via Veneto, near Barbarini Square

    3) The Scala Santa or Holy Stairs, twenty-eight steps in the Lateran Palace, located opposite San Giovanni Laterano. According to tradition, the staircases were part of the praetorium of Pilate in Jerusalem, hence were sanctified by the footsteps of Jesus Christ during his Passion. You may only walk up these stairs on your knees.

  2. Colosseum

    Imperial Forum

    Pantheon

    Spanish Steps

    Piazza

    Castel Sant Angelo (Hadrian's Castle)

    Vatican City

And don't forget to stop for gelato!

  3. Definitly the Vatican. I loved going there. Me and my mother would travel by train there every weekend. Its definitly a site to take in!

  4. well, do not miss: Colosseo, Roman Forum, Vatican Museum, St. Peter, Capitol Museum, Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, Pantheon

  5. The Roman Forum is amazing and I enjoyed Domus Aurea, Nero's Golden House. Also, be sure to walk around the city center at night. The ruins and fountains are lit up in a way that is quite beautiful.

  6. The romantic Borghese Gardens are right behind the Spanish steps and free.

  7. all the tourist attractions. you can get a map from the visitor center, when your at the rome airport. if not, you can get on the metro, and the stops are at the attraction sites. don't forget to wake up really early for the vatican. their is a long line by 8 am. also, don't forget to check the dates online because it closes on certain days. one day for the vatican, and one day for everything else. its walkable.

    enjoy rome!

  8. Seems like the top sights have been already mentioned.

In addition, the Borghese Gallery is supposed to be really amazing (you may need reservations to get into this small gallery).  I had a lot of fun at the Leonardo da Vinci museum in Piazza del Popolo.  Trastevere can be a really fun place to eat out and enjoy the ambience.  There is also a really nice Santa Maria church in Trastevere.

In addition to hitting up the main sights, I had a lot of fun stopping at these empty yet beautiful churches that I discovered along the way.
