as for type, if you just want to skimboard accross flat sand rather than catch waves then a plywood or maple wood skimboard will do fine. You should be able to pick one up for around £10 or $15 from ebay or pretty much any beach shop

maple skimmers will start at around £20 as the wood is more expensive. The diffenrence between ply and maple is that ply is weaker and it will warp or bend when left in the hear. Maple is more robust and can withstand high temperatures.

if you are looking to skimboard more skim more seriously then u can go for a foam or fibreglass one. top of the range fibreglass or epoxy ones can  be upwards of 300££££
