I'll be working at an Orphanage in Huancayo for three weeks and then I'll be taking a week to go see the sites in Cuzco. What should I do? Machu Picchu is of course the main thing, is there an inexpensive 3 or four day hike through tht jungle I can take? What souvenirs should I look for? Give me the inside scoop so I'll know that to avoid and what not to miss. Thank you!!!!!!

  1. Good for you!  Take in the ruins in Cuzco and go horseback riding.  It's super cheap and totally worth it.  I don't think an inexpensive multi-day hike exists.  Make train reservations to Machu Picchu in advance and hike to up to the peak of Wanapicchu(sp).  Save your money for the expensive jungle hike for your next trip to Machu Piccu.  Once you see it, you will want to go back.  As far as souvenirs go, pick up a hand-made chess set featuring the Incas vs the Spanish explorers.  It may sound ridiculous, but I think it is one of the coolest gifts I've ever brought back.  good luck

  2. The cusco region has a lot sites to be seen. The temple of the lightning in Cusco is impresive and some other limestone shrines near by. On the other hand the sacred valley when going to Machupicchu is worthy to be seen. If you are explorer you can hike further to Vicabamba last inca remote stronhold, or if you are more traditionalist stay in Cusco and Machupicchu. but if you are more adventure you can try mountain biking, horse riding, rafting and jungle trips like Manu. Finally you can visit PPZ for live rock and jazz concerts just 2 block from the main square, it has good atmosphere, local people and nice drinks.
