I'll be there on a cruise & have an excursion planned for the afternoon. I'm curious as to how to spend my morning. Any shops / attractions that are "must see"?

  6. Bridgetown is very cool actually.  Especially for shopping, which frequently includes an open air vegetable market.  There is a cd store in the main square - You absolutely must buy a Soca cd.  The music is amazing, it's kind of an over the top celebratory music.  Although they have upscale eateries all over the island especially for seafood, I really fell in love with the local dishes, like fried flying fish, or Mauby.  And you must at least eat one meal at Chefette.  It's kind of like an upscale fast food type of place serving thick steaks, barbequed chicken, and even fish.  They make big meals and it's cheap - and before I forget, Chefette makes a pepper sauce for just about anything on the menu like steaks, pork or chicken - it's fabulously hot, but actually flavorful as well...it's very spicy but with a very bold flavor.  It's awesome.  They also sell it by the 2 and sometimes three litre bottles in the grocery and certainly at the airport.

I've been there so many times, and I always come away with something new.  I've had the privelige to drive throughout the entire island, mostly on a moped or on one of the local "mokes." and was surprised by how the scenerly was facinating to me.  You have the churches, and then some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere.  There are a number of beachfront mansions as well, owned mostly by wealthy british or europeans.  There's St. Lawrence on the Gap, with all the bars and restaurants.  There's just so much to do in Barbados.  There are a lot of neat little things about that island.  You really need about a week to really explore Barbados.  Better yet, is that it's relatively safer than most other islands.  It's my favorite island in the caribbean, and I've been to several.

If your visit is very time limited, then I'd stick to everything I mentioned above, including getting the soca cd, the chefette restaurant, etc... all of that is located in the main square of Bridgetown.  You don't have to walk far to see anything that I mentioned which is great also.  St. Lawrence on the gap is about a ten to fifteen minute taxi ride away.  If you want seafood, then you must try "Pieces" Restaurant.  It's moderately priced, but the food is awesome.  They also make steaks and even other types of dishes, but all of it was very upscale buy very well worth it.
