What are the best travel spots in Italy?

I'm looking for a place that's along the coast towards the north with nice beaches. I also want a location that isn't TOO crowded and fairly inexpensive. Thanks for any help you can give!

I agree with love2travel. I lived in Rapallo for 4 years, and although the public beaches are crowded, the ones where you have to pay to get in are not. Forget Portofino, except for a day trip to gawk at the Rodeo Drive-priced merchandise and the huge yachts. The beaches between Rapallo and La Spezia are far off the tourists' beaten track. I love Liguria!

You MUST see the renowned Cinque Terre (beside la Spezia):  five villages Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore make a singular landscape of both spirit and harmony.

It's truly a beautiful place.

Santa Margherita Ligure - Italian Riviera:

Good daytrips from 'Santa' include Portofino, the picturesque San Fruttuoso Abbey, the resorts of Camogli and Rapallo, Genoa and the Cinque Terre (around an hour by train, or an all-day boat excursion).

There are no nice beaches up north that are not too crowded. For nice beaches go to Greece.

if you want to go to the best spots, it is always busy.  For example, Rome is beautiful and once you are there, you should see the Wish fountain, Coliseum, and Vatican, but these are all busy.
