I want to know what the best way is to save gas besides, driving less or moving. Like what can you do to save it while traveling somewhere. I want some of your creative suggestions on how to save gas.

Thank You!!

  1. I got a high performance air filter in my car I saw my MPG go up by about 3mpg just by using that instead of the normal one. I spent about $6 more on the air filter but it evens out.

  2. 1.  Use someone else's car.

    2.  Get behind a big truck on the highway, and let his draft pull you along.

    3.  Put your car in neuteral on long downhill grades.

    4.  Don't change speeds.  Get into your highest gear and stay there.  Acceleration and braking kill MPG's.

    5.  The faster you drive, the sooner you will get to where you're going, and the sooner you can turn the engine off.

    6.  Know where you're going and how to get there before you start.

    7.  Gas is usually cheaper off the main highway.

  3. drive slower.  driving faster gives you worse gas milage.  also, carpooling or taking public transit also helps with saving gas.

  4. public transportation

  5. take shorter routes and go to places only if tou have too. if you can walk somewhere dont drive.

  6. Maintain a steady speed.

    Slow acceleration from a stop.

Anticipate the need to stop, and coast before you brake.

Have the right air pressure in your tires.

No excess weight in the car.

  7. Your car is only a tiny piece of the puzzle.

If you're talking saving gas individually then what they all sed. If you're talking about things we all can do to reduce demand (and therefor price) for petroleum:

Buy and eat local! think beyond your car's MPG to your lunch's MPG. Why get strawberries FLOWN or SHIPPED in from who knows where when you can get fresh food grown at least in your own state or community?

So you don't have strawberries in winter. Won't it taste that much better when you have the first berry of Summer?

Buy organic. WTF? Organic? Why? Well whadya think standard fertilizer and insecticide is made of? Petrol products. So whether it's food, shampoo, towels, clothing ... there are affordable organic options.

It reduces pollution to our air, soil and water and ... lowers the demand on oil.

Reduce, reuse, recycle plastics. When asked paper or plastic .... neither. Bring your own reusable bag. Ask your store to offer recycling for used plastic bags.

That liter of Pepsi you just drank? Do you know how many miles you need to ride a bike to work that off? ;-)

Recycle the bottle. Recycle in your home, work, community .... start a recycling drive. While using recycled products and recycling's always a good idea ... plastic is made from .... drum roll ...... Petrol.

If your area gets energy and heat from home heating oil, energy retrofit your home. Help others to do so especially fixed income and the elderly. This could be as simple as lined curtains, calking windows and doors ... you know the drill.

I could go on but let's all work together to reduce dependence on oil and tell Big Oil/foreign oil "bye bye, we don't need you much anymore ... we have solar, alternate fuel and look, I'm recycling. Byeeeeee!"

  8. - Don't use the air conditioner or heater.

    - Don't accelerate to get to a red light or stop sign faster.

    - Drive on roads with fewer lights/stops.

    - I heard cruise control takes up more gas.

    - I also heard having your windows open slows the car (cuz of the wind?)

That's all I can think of, lol.

  9. don't step on your gas hard or brake hard.  Your rpms should rarely go above 2.5  oh and if you are taking the freeway roll up your windows and use the air conditioner, the air coming in the windows creates drag.

  10. drive in a higher gear,

over pump your tires by a few PSI (mine run at 50PSI but they are high Performance tires)

reduce engine load while driving-accelerate slowly, if Driving up hill keep your rpm mid to high in a lower gear, its better for our engine and economy

remove excess weight from you trunk, bags, Children, annoying Girlfriend.

    cruise control long stretches

buy a lower weight oil, lower weight = less resistance = more economy,

Remove any sort of roof rack

really 3 basic things to think about

    Drag

    Weight

    stress

  11. make your drive as smooth as possible, meaning accelerate gently and don't brake so hard.  You can also get in a smaller car like a civic or corolla.  getting a prius is not a bad idea either

  12. drive at the speed limit and carpool with friends

  13. Drive more slowly.  Really, the wind resistance eats up a lot of gas, and driving slower causes less resistance and therefore you use less gas.  A coworker of mine drives 35 min to work each day.  He drives 55 mph instead of the allowed 65 mph, and gets one extra round trip on a tank of gas.  It adds less than five minutes to his drive.

  14. Drive the speed limit.  When we took a trip last month we went the speed limit on two lane roads instead of going on the interstates and it really saved the gas to go 55 instead of 70 or 80  It didn't take that much longer to get there, and we saw some new scenery.  Avoid those interstates!  When you go shopping, plan the route so that you don't go back and forth across town.  Make only the trips that you have to make,  Only go to the grocery store once a week instead of every day or two.  Wait to go somewhere if you can until you have a second reason for going out.  Make that gas count!

  15. Car pool, turn off motor instead of idling when in a long line, go 50 miles per hour instead of faster, use cruise control, keep unnecessary stuff (weight) out of your car, keep tires inflated properly. These are all I could find...I'm about ready to protest, how about you?

  16. There are few thing you can do to save (or maximize) gas MPG. First get a tune-up.

    (1) spark plugs

    (2) spark plug wires

    (3) distributors, coil, rotors (if you have them).

    (4) new air filter

    (5) PCV

    (6) correct tire pressure

    (7) clear the trunk of useless heavy items

    (8) spray clean MAF sensor.

Forget all those "SAVE GAS" scams.  This was on NBC morning TV show.   The difference is as much as 38% (their claim).  There are very simple rules to save gas:

    (1) drive slow - not too much past 55

    (2) accelerate slowly

    (3) don't brake unnecessarily

    (4) use cruise control - whenever it is safe to do so.

Don't coast - it is NOT safe (to coast in Nuetral) and it does NOT save gas.  It only saves gas, if you are planning to slow down (exiting, tolls, traffic).  Coasting then accelerating again is LESS efficient than just cruising.

The above really works. Using those simple rules I was able to drive from Boston to NYC (210.5 miles) on just 5.112 gallon (94 Civic).  That's 41 MPG (94 Civic 187K miles).  Actually I was speeding at 72 MPH so I could do even better at 55.

    WOW !!

    Good Luck...
