  1. Some suggestions:

    1. Lower the max temperature on your hot water heater (Free).

    2. Have the unit cleaned at least once every 2 years to keep in operating at peak efficiency (Varies $40-80).

    3. Use an insulating blanket around the main tank and pipes leading away from the unit($15-20).

    4. Install aerators on your bathroom faucets and in your shower to reduce the amount of hot water that is flowing out during use (less used, less to reheat later ($5).

    5. If insulating is too expensive - open the curtains during the day to naturally heat your home (Free).  You can also use painters tape around the edges of unused windows to slow heat leakage in the winter ($3).

    6. Invest in a programmable thermostat that automatically heats the house a short time before you wake up instead of all night long (Varies $40-80). Other thoughts: Use cold water detergent, wash full loads in the dishwasher as well - again - less hot water less oil needed to heat it.

  2. use gas. if available

  3. weatherize, and insulate your home.

  4. You'll have to turn down the thermostat and put more warm cloths on.

When you go to bed turn the temp. down to 52 degrees.  At 52 degrees there will be no freeze.  Add a blanket or two.  You'll be nice and cozy.

During the day, depending on the sun, keep the temp down to about 62 degrees.  Keep busy and that will warm you up.

If cold is coming through windows and doors, there are products you can purchase just for that.  Shouldn't cost you a lot of money and will pay in the end.

Keep drapes closed at night.  During the day leave them open to let the sun in.

You can conserve if you put your mind in gear.

There is fuel assistance if you're low income.  Check it out to see if you qualify.  It's well worth the effort.

If you have ceiling fans make sure you reverse them in the winter to let the warm air come down.

I'm sure you can come up with more ideas.

Good luck in your quest to save money, especially with the high prices for fuel.  We all feel the pinch.

  5. Insulate more, especially around doors and windows and in attics, and turn down the thermostat.

Wear multiple layers of clothing when you are inside the house.  Only you need to be warm.  Not your house.

  6. Better insulation, turn your thermostat down to 68 degrees F during the day and 62 degrees at night.
