  1. Those are big cages but the only reason they are big is because of tubes but this cage is big and kinda cheap.

YOU CAN ADD IT ALL UP HEIGHT WISE AND ADD SPACE STATIONS AND ALL THAT!

  3. Awesome! Someone finally thinking about space for hamsters!

It also depends on your hamster that you have/want. A syrian can live in many rat cages with cm wide bars. You do have to be creative to break falls if the cage doesn't have enough shelves built into it though.  If you are in america one of the 'martin's' cages would work out or in the uk a 'critter' (also teranziani) cage would be great, the critter 2 is a good size if you are creative with making sure the hamster doesn't fall off the ramp.

If it's dwarf hammies then a massive tank would be awesome making sure the lid is fully ventilated with mesh for good circulation. Floor space is important so maybe get an aquarium built custom size meter wide perhaps? I know bin cages are popular and you can give them more ventilation by adding mesh sections. If you can get one of those that fit 'under the bed' and customise it it would be great lots of floor space, make sure its tall enough for boxes and igloos and wheels.

I'd recommend joining some hamster forums and get lots of ideas from other owner's habitat pics

  4. Use your bin cages!

Have you had a problem with venilation in them? Or do you as a precaution leave your modified lids off except at night?

We also use 105 qt for our colonies. We venilate just the lids, leave the lids on (cats) when we're not playing with them and have never had a problem with moisture or any other signs of poor venilation. Room temp is pretty consistant, since they are in a air conditioned room. We do live in a high humidity (Central Florida) area, but the air conditioning minimises that. Where you are could be different conditions. Maybe do a test run with lids on before your trip?

If you actually have had a problem, add more venilation.  Look online and you'll find hundreds of different ways folks have done this. I haven't tried it, but the soldering iron to poke holes in the sides is a good idea. Just make sure they are above your pets reach.

I'm guessing you have dwarfs of some sort because you said they were living together and you wouldn't house Syrians together. I have never seen a suitable (safe, escape proof, large enough) cage on the market for these. Most cages you find for sale, would fit INSIDE your bin.

If you don't already have a second water bottle in your bin, I'd add one for vacation. This way if one leaks and no one is there to catch it, you do have a back up.
