What are the birthday traditions in India?

I don't want to say or give something that isn't appropriate or offensive. The woman is in her 30s and she is a co-worker, so nothing too personal

it depends on how old you are, whether you are elder or younger to her, are you a male or female etc. as such indians dont have any traditions or conventions of givings birthday gifts specially in case of colleagues. i would say that a gift of a simple book on some general topic would do no harm.
