Many breeds and mixed breed (aka domestic shorthair/longhair) come in black and white bicolor.  However 97% of all cats in the US are mixed breeds so unless the cat was bought from a breeder or otherwise came with papers the safe assumption is the cat is a mixed breed

We had a female blk/white cat and I called her a "cow kitty" because her markings looked like a cow. Her name was Missy, and yes the are just called DSH.
