  3. For starters, try Edith Hamilton's "Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes." It's a little better than Bulfinch, and it's more fun to read. I'd also ad Robert Graves, "Greek Myths," but only if you really get into mythology. He's very good for relating all the different versions of each myth. As for original works, I'd suggest starting with Hesiod's "Theogony" and "Works and Days." Then you might move on to Homer. If any particular myth really strikes you, you might want to try finding a Greek play based on it. Sophocles, Eschylus, Euripides, and (my favorite) Aristophanes, wrote plays based on many of the most important Greek myths and did much to shape which myths and which versions of those myths we now believe to be the most important.

  4. OK!Some basics are: Zeus and the other gods of Olympous

                                          Hercules

                                          Jason

                                          Thisseas

                                           War of Troy

                                           Odysseus

    try www.wikipedia. com!

  5. I say that the best thing that you can do would be to search wikipedia for the major Olympian gods/goddesses. Then I would suggest the Iliad and the Oddessy. They really are not hard books to read.

    OLYMPIAN GODS/GODDESSES

    -Zeus

    -Hera

    -Athena

    -Demeter

    -Poseidon

    -Hades

    -Artemis

    -Apollo

    -Aphrodite

    -Ares

    -Hermes

    -Hephaestus

  8. My brother once got a free copy of Bulfinches Mythology with a computer game. It has pretty much every Greek myth or legend, some Norse legends, the tales of King Arthur and the legends of Charlemagne. But it is written very drily so may be hard going. I use it as a reference for Classics.

  9. I grew up reading D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths so there's a place to start for basics.  Move on the Edith Hamilton's book Mythology.  Rosemary Sutcliff's Black Ships Before Troy is a definate read.  And if you're feeling very brave the Iliad and then the Odyssey translanted by Robert Fagles.  There are, no doubt, other books out there, but these are great places to start and tend to cover a lot of ground.

  10. Bulfinch's Mythology has all of those stories in the one book. It's an older book and you can get it pretty cheap on amazon if you can't find it elsewhere. I got mine there :)

  11. For the basics read Hesiod and the Theogonis - it gives a good background.
