  1. These countries belong to East Asia:

    China

    Mongolia

    Japan

    Taiwan

    North Korea

    South Korea

  2. Usually the cultural sphere dominated by Chinese civilization. Often it is defined by the political boundaries of China, Japan, the Koreas, Taiwan, and Mongolia.

Some consider those boundaries too broad encompassing territories far to the west of China proper, which is inhabited by Han Chinese. So Tibet, Chinese Turkestan (XinJiang) and Mongolia would not be part of East Asia.

In contrast to the splitters, lumpers would add the Russian Far East and Indochina.
