  1. The four basic branches of anthropology are:

Archaeology - This field focuses on the evidence left behind by past cultures. This includes tools, buildings, art, etc.  This is not to be confused with paleontology, which is the study of dinosaurs. (I have heard MANY people mix that up.)

Physical Anthropology - This field focuses on how people have changed over time. Evolution is a common field of study in this area. Some physical anthropologists also study other primates. Jane Goodall, for example, studies chimpanzees.

Linguistics- This field studies languages. How they have developed, how they have changed. Spoken vs. written.

Cultural Anthropology- This field studies various cultures. Trends, taboos, traditions, religion, etc.  Many cultural anthropologists will live within a culture for a few years to thoroughly study the people, their interactions, social class system, etc. Margaret Mead is a famous cultural anthropologist.

Each one of these fields has their own sub-fields and areas of specialization, but these are the four main categories.
