  1. What are the causes and risks of the disease?

Liver disease can be caused by a variety of factors. Causes include:

congenital birth defects, or abnormalities of the liver present at birth

metabolic disorders, or defects in basic body processes

    viral or bacterial infections

    alcohol or poisoning by toxins

certain medications that are toxic to the liver

    nutritional deficiencies

    trauma, or injury

  2. Please specify if you mean the chemical reactions taking place on the cellular level and I can answer that for you.

If that's not what you meant, there are several things that can cause liver disease. Drinking too much alcohol can cause cirrhosis of the liver, which is basically cell death that leads to decrease liver function and scarring of the hepatic tissue.

Acetominophen toxicity is another. If a person takes too much tylenol or mixes even normal doses of acetominophen with alcohol this can lead to cirrhosis or hepatic jaundice, where the skin and whites of the eyes turn yellow from an accumulation of bile in the system. This is how you can identify some alcoholics.

All of the Hepatitis viruses can cause liver diease and even death. You can get this infection from contaminated blood or plasma, sexual intercourse, or sharing hypodermic syringes with the infected. There are three forms of Hepatitis, I believe A is much worse than the others, B and C.

Hepatitis simply means : Hepa (liver) in Latin; itis (inflammation) in Latin. Thje human body processes many chemicals via the liver, so in theory, too much of any chemical can overwhelm the liver and lead to hepatic cellular necrosis, or liver cell death.

Another example of this is the chemical Kavalactone, which is in a tropical drink called Kava Kava, ingested by Pacific islanders and found in pill form in the US and UK. If you're interested in the metabolic pathways that can lead to liver cell death, wikipedia has some great articles about this. be sure to look up renal toxicity, as the kidneys are also involved much of the time in processing chemicals that can damage the liver.

  3. Liver disease can be caused by things you ingest (like alcohol), it can be caused by various viruses (Hepatitis A, B, C, and D), or it can be caused by a chemical imbalance. nutritional imbalances, congential defects from birth, drug use, trauma, injury, metabolic disorders, bacterial infections, and other causes. Be liver conscious, don't smoke or drink, eat a well balanced diet, don't do drugs, and practice safe s*x.
