  1. Sometimes chips just wear out.  Also, chips can be damaged by high temperatures or voltage surges.

  2. You describe a convergence problem though you do not say what type of TV you have , is it CRT type or plasma or projection or Lcd !!.

I would seek professional help before assuming the " chips "  (there are lots of chips in a Tv all doing different jobs ) need replacement !!!

PS Chips do not wear out out !!! they usually fail because their design operating parameters have been exceeded .

    Cheers Pete

  3. One does need more information about the exact make and model of set to help with a diagnosis.  Take the set to a repair shop.

And yes, chips do "just wear out".  One of the mechanisms is called "hot carrier injection".  There are a few other mechanisms, too.  However, playing the odds, if a chip fails, the more common cause is exceeding the device's ratings (like heat or voltage spikes).

I hope this helps.  Please return ans select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.
