I was fired from my job of 8 years due to tardiness. I have a son to take care and i just feel so lost right now. The tardiness was due to my son's sleep issues (he has night terrors) and issues with dropping him off at the babysitter and also car trouble. any advice would be much appreciated. thank you

  1. it really depends on the state you live in. in ohio, if you are unemployed, made over $250 at your last job a week and don't have a lot of assets and somebody else supporting you in the household then you are eligible

  2. Because you were fired due to your own behavior, you're not entitled to unemployment.  If you have a nice employer, they may feel sorry for you and say they won't fight it, but unemployment is meant for people who lost their jobs through no fault of their own (lay offs, etc).

  3. Doubtful.  Did they give you written warnings?  Did you sign off on the written warnings?  As long as they have paperwork showing your lateness  in your personal file, you will not get it. Because I am sorry to say, like it or not, you were at fault.  It was your job to be there at a specific time everyday, and they had just cause to let you go.  Sorry. I know it sucks, but that is probably how it is going to go down.

  4. You don't say what state/country you are in.  I can only speak for Ohio and it is unlikely you would receive unemployment benefits because you were fired for tardiness. You may be able to fight it if there was no employee manual and/or you weren't warned in writing that being tardy would get you fired. But most companies that fire for this have already documented it and can prove to the unemployment bureau that they have just cause to fire you.

But come on, single moms with children manage all the time to get it together. Maybe you need to look at some time management skills or compromise on your own rest every once in awhile to keep a job.  If your babysitter and car are problems, then you need to address that.

I've gone many times to work with only 3-4 hours of sleep and you know what, you plow through it. You can't roll over and figure you'll just sleep a little longer and be late.

It's absurd to lose a job because you are tardy! Jobs are too hard to get and now you can't even get a decent reference after working for 8 years.

I would look for a temp agency and see if you can get some temp jobs and maybe you will find an employer who will overlook your problem and hire you permanently.  But please don't bother taking a job if you can't address the problems and fix them that made you tardy in the past.

  5. None, you were fired, the only change you get approve by dep of labor is if you are laid off for lack of work or any other reason, sorry to tell you
