  1. To have the best chance of avoiding nerves, go to an extremely reputable and thorough piercer. A piercer should check the inside of your lip in the area to be pierced very carefully BEFORE piercing you. Your piercer may eyeball where the piercing is going to look best, but then the skin inside the mouth should be carefully inspected.

While your piercer should check the area as completely as possible, some nerves are just too tiny or hidden too deeply in the tissue to be seen. So even the best of piercers may have the bad luck to hit a tiny nerve. If you feel an electric shock of pain durring your piercing, let your piercer know immediately. Some people can heal a piercing that irritates a nerve, while others will have more trouble with the issue. If you let your piercer know what's happened, they can note it on your chart and help you choose a course of action.

Personally I had a nerve nipped when my verticle labrets were done. My piercer checked and double checked the area before piercing, but it was too small to see even with a light shone through my tissue. Hitting that nerve felt like someone stuck my jaw in an electrical outlet. On the bright side my body has adjusted and the area is back to normal. It was a little "tingly" or "fuzzy" feeling right along the piercing for a few weeks, but it has corrected itself.

On the other side of the coin a friend of mine has a pair of snakebites where one side refuses to heal fully and has always been very tender. She's reasonably certain that her piercer didn't check the area well enough and pierced through a nerve that has no intention of quieting down.

So while accidents happen, you should choose the best and most competent piercer you can find. This may mean going to the slightly more expensive shop or driving a little farther, but getting a well done piercing is worth the extra work. If you do end up with a "pinched" nerve, let your piercer know. You can wait to see how the area heals and see if you get lucky.

  2. NOTHING is going to happen unless you don't take care of it after wards. Don't worry. Its a really nice piercing BTW

  3. of course it's going to affect your nerves...it's a piercing!! That goes thru nerves!! lol...my daughter got hers done and she's never had a problem...sry..didn't mean to be sarcastic...if it's done by a professional and you take care of it after, then you'll be just fine..
