I've been fired at a previous job for violating company policy. Since then I've had one job for a year but had to leave it because I moved. I've been applying to sooo many places in my new town and no one has even called me for an interview! I'd like to know if its because I am putting on the app that I have been fired?? I don't know if it's better to lie or what?? What are the chances someone will hire me!? Or even interview me to let me explain myself?! What should I do?

  1. Most employers are savy enough to know there are always at least 3 sides to every story...your side, the other side, and the truth.  They also know EVERYONE makes mistakes.  If you've been fired at a previous job, that is not necessarily a disqualifing factor...depending on the reason.  If you were fired for industrial espionage or stealing from the cash drawer that's one thing, but if it revolved around not performing a simple task, then use that to your benefit.  Hopefully you have identified the problem and know how to keep it from happening in the future and will explain that in the interview...hint hint!

Whatever you do, DO NOT lie on your application.  Most large corporations do an extensive background check which include calling references and if you are caught in a lie, that is grounds for immediate termination at most places.

  2. Not fired; "Left".

Everyone has "left" a job at some time and been hired by another employer.
