i've hoped for twins before, but never got pregnant with twins. i'm pregnant by another man now, who is my fiance, and i was curious as to the chances of conceiving twins. he has twins in his family, and i have distant family that has had twins( like fourth or fifth cousin). so what would the chances be? and please don't send me any smart remarks.

  1. well,I have identical  twins. Identical twins do not run in a family.

Fraternal twins do. I would say that your chances of conceving twins is pretty slim as it depends on your side of the family not your fiances.

  2. Fraternal twins come from your side of the family. They're caused by hyperovulation (releasing more than one egg) and that's a hereditary trait.

Identical twins are created by chance, or God depending on how you look at it. = ) Basically one egg splits into two and creates two babies. No one's sure why that happens, and it could happen to anyone.

  3. My ob/gyn told me that every woman has a 3% chance of having twins.

I think the chance is slightly higher if it runs in the family. My dad is a twin and I'm a twin. He also had twin cousins. But it's the woman who has to release two eggs, so I would guess that your chances are higher if you're the one with twins in the family. Just a guess though.

  4. Twins on the fathers side actually have no bearing on you having twins...just on the mothers side (and only the mother's side of that mother...only through girls).  That is for fraternal, which are genetic.  Identical are just a fluke of nature and you chances are the same as everyone out there.
