  1. Fairly low, unless you jumped into the middle of the ocean.

Then they are VERY HIGH. ;P

It also depends where you are. Like if there's a lifeguard, how tough the waves are, ect.

Also if a storm is coming or not.

Stick to the well-known beaches with lifeguards and mild waves, and you should be prettyyy safe.

  2. What are the chances of dying in your sleep....or getting hit by a car while walking across the street???

  3. It depends:

    Are you a fisherman?

    Do you drink alcohol?

Do you swim in the ocean?

Do you travel by boat or ship on the ocean?

Do you live or travel through tsunami areas?

Have you ever left your community in Montana?

Are you suicidal and thought about swimming to your death in the ocean?

Speaking for myself, I'd say that my chances of death are much greater from natural causes such as extreme old age. Given my limited proximty to the ocean, I'd estimate my chances of death in the ocean at about 5,000,000,000 to 1.

However, if you want an average for humans on earth. You can take the number of deaths in the ocean per year and divide it by the number of death of all kinds per year.  Of course, there was a spike due to the Indian Ocean tsunami of 100,000 deaths. In the US, there are 2.4 million deaths per year. I cannot find the stats in the US ocean drownings.

In Norway, drowning is approximately 9 persons per 100,000 or .00009. I'd take a stab that most of these are in an ocean.
