What are the chances of my luggage being lost with United Airlines??

Question

I'm flying from Glasgow, Scotland to San Francisco via London Heathrow.

My flight from Glasgow to London is with BMI, then I catch a flight from Heathrow to SFO.

What are the chances of my luggage being lost?

Also, on my luggage tags should I write my home address or the address that I will be staying at for the duration of my holidays???

According to some recent statistics, United mishandled the baggage of 5.23 passengers per 1,000 passengers, so the odds of them mishandling your baggage is about 200 to 1. It can't hurt to include the address at your destination, but you will need to give them that information if your bag does come up missing. Also, it's a good idea to put your contact information inside your suitcase as well as having luggage tags and never put any valuables in your checked luggage. I know airlines do mishandle baggage, but on over hundreds of flights and connecting flights I've never once had a bag mishandled or lost.

United supposedly has done a better job handling passenger's baggage but to help prevent mishandled bags, here are some things I would do.

1.  When you check-in your bags with BMI, make sure the tags have the correct airport codes.  Heathrow is LHR and San Francisco is SFO.  Sometimes bags are lost because the ticket agent put in the wrong airport code.

2.  Make sure your connection in London is not super-short.  If you have a tight connection, you may make the flight, but sometimes your luggage doesn't.
