Question:

What are the chances of this being a scam?

Recently we started getting many phone calls a day, from various numbers, e.g. 623.643.2995 - 850.478.2651 - 800.695.0242 - 615.315.2669 - 866.475.5819. If you don't pick up, they call back over and over from a different number. If you do, the person on the line has so thick an accent that you can hardly understand her. I've never gotten so far that they actually tell me what they want (they beat around the bush), but when I looked them up, most numbers looked like some dodgy collection agency.

What are the chances of: a) this being a scam to get credit card info, and b) some dirtbag actually having debt and giving companies our number? We have no debt to anyone, and yet somehow they are calling us, and seem to know our names.

  1. it probably is a scam to get your credit card number or your bank number.

next time they call,  ask them who they are collecting a debt for?  i bet the calls will stop once you call them out.

  2. There are alot of scams going on, you should never give out personal information on the phone or internet to any one, next time they call tell then you want a written letter in the mail then you will think about giving the information out. then if they actually send you a letter call the company and ask to speak to a manager to verify the information and what you account is,  If they will not do this it is a scam.

  3. You're right to be suspicious.  Is there a Better Business Bureau or similar agency where you live that you can report them to?  That might the first step in getting shut down if they are running a scam, or at getting them to change their practices if they really are legitimate.

  4. No doubt scam artists.  this is what happens when ever you make donations, fill out contest forms whatever, they may say they do not sell your information, but this is bogus.

Even the Federal Do not call, program has been hacked into and that did not work too well either.
