I am 13 and I love horse riding but my mum wont let me do it because she says its too dangerous. Is it really that dangerous or how would I persuade her to let me do it? Well I emailed our local stables where I rode before and asked them if I could go up and help out mucking out, grooming, tacking up etc to earn some extra money. Will I get it? I'm only 13 so I'm not sure.. I need opinions. Thanks

  1. If you don't know that riding can be dangerous...then you need to start out just volunteering to clean stalls and groom. Then maybe by the end of summer you can ask to continue your "job" and get lessons for the work you do. Learn about the horses and the work that is behind the pretty pasture ornament before you start trying to persuade your mom into letting you ride! I cleaned stalls and fed the whole barn to pay for board when I was your age, but by then I had been riding for 12 years, litterally.  IMHO you are never too old to work off your board or lessons!

  2. Your chances are good just don't expect to get payed. Because you are younger, they might not pay you quite yet. But helping around the stables is a great way for you and your mom to get used to the idea of horses. maybe invite her to come and watch you to show her that horses aren't that bad.

  3. I'd say you have a good chance of getting the job if they need that kind of help, if you can and will do what they need you to do, and if you are consistent (meaning do really good job all the time and don't slack off or goof around).

If you want to make an really good impression and show them you really are serious about getting a job there, take the time to write a resume.  Now, I know you probably haven't had a job before, but write down why you want the job, what qualifications your have for the position, and what your horse interests are.  If you know anyone who would be willing to write a letter of recommendation ( a teacher, your best friend's mom, etc.), ask them to do so.  If you know anyone who can attest to your horse care skills, ask them if you can use them as a reference and give the stables their name, address, phone number and how you know them.  Just put it on your "resume".

Have your mom or dad review your "resume" and check it for any errors (spelling, grammar, etc.) before you send it to the stables.

Good luck!  Your parents should be proud of you for wanting to earn your own spending money!

  4. Well... Are you asking for pay? If so, I kinda doubt it. Usually(at least in my state) You have to be fourteen to be paid. IF you wanted to volunteer- then I would probably say they would let you. Good luck!!! :)

  5. In horse back riding it is somewhat dangerous.  But it mostly depends on what discipline you do.  If all you are wanting to do is take lessons, then you should be fine.  Lesson horses are really good and that is why they put inexperienced people on them.  If this is the case, then your Mom should let you ride.  But things like eventing and jumping can get pretty dangerous. Good luck.

  6. yes it is a little dangerous...

what kind of horse is it.

  7. Not gonna happen take it from another 13 year old who has tried and tried that! Sorry... I know how you feel!

  8. Honestly, if you are doing work for someone, then you should be compensation for it in one way or another.  After all, no one would expect you to work for "nothing".

If you lived near me, I could use you for sure.

  9. I think that would be a great oppourtunity for you..tell your mom that everything has risks and if this is rele something you love and want to do she should understand..and if your not on a crazy horse then you should be fine, but just remember you have never rele ridden a horse unless you have been bucked off a few times
