  1. Needless to say don't follow the 18 wheelers to closely, They kick up all kinds of stuff, retread tires for one. I'm also concerned about deer and other varmints that run out on the road at night.

You just have to be aware of your surroundings at all times and expect the unexpected and you'll be alright.

  2. You're not worrying too much.

About once every 10K miles I run into or over something that I think is going to kill me.  Hasn't yet.

I ran over the bumper of a compact car.  It hit my front tire, went up in the air, and landed on the hood of the car behind me.

I've run over mattresses and boards too.

  3. Day time hazards never bothered me. I try to pay attention to the road up ahead. Its the deer that bother me at night time. If you are going to worry about running into a mattress in broad daylight you may be investigating the wrong hobby.

  4. yes, you are worrying too much. I've been riding 30+ years and only recently have I been hit by a road hazard- it was a plastic bag that melted all over my pipes. It was the first time I've had something get me.

You are more likely to get hit by bugs, cigarette butts, and the occasional rock. Having a windscreen deflects most of that. Eye protection usually gets the rest. I had a leaf scratch my cheek once, but it was hardly life-threatening.

Wear sleeves, pants, eye protection and boots. You'll be fine.

  5. your bigger concern should be cagers. you can predict the way a bucket on the side of the freeway gonna go... you cant predict where a crazy lady talking on the cell phone, eating a burrito, and looking at directions on GPS while driving a big *** SUV is gonna do.

    good luck

  6. 8 to 1

  7. all life is a gamble....   but if ya dont take it...   not much of a life.

  8. Same as in a car. Not an issue if you ride with common sense.

  9. Riding is Inherently risky and We know it. The best You can do is take a Rider training course, wear proper gear, and ride defensively. I would worry much more about  2 ton SUV's  on the freeway than road trash.

  10. You should be safe, and sell your bike today!

Better be  safe than enjoy life.

Life should be diminished to a 'no risk 'endeavor, with punitive damages if anything goes wrong.

Put your bike on E BAY and call your lawyer immediately!

Then stay in bed, and only return calls from your lawyer and your shrink.

Hire someone to bring you toast in bed, and buy a good bed pan.

You'll end up like bitter old some of nothin, with no teeth and poor grammar.

  11. wear a helmet and proper gear. common sense.

  12. I have yet to hit anything big enough to really hurt over the years.  A bird to the chest was the worst thing so far and I would compare that to taking a softball to the chest off a bad bounce. I have a friend who broke his ankle when he hit a grouse or more likely a grouse flew into his foot.  I also know a guy who plowed a goldwing into a deer and walked away, bike a was totaled though so go figure.  I would not spend too much time worrying about problems that you do not even have yet, it takes all the fun out of riding.  Just wear your gear and watch out when your out there enjoying the ride.

  13. Well, let's see...on a recent trip to Las Vegas (2662 miles round trip) I avoided about 1500 pieces of truck tire rubber, 6 dead Armadillos, 3 cats, several car mufflers and a drunken hitchhiker in Albuquerque. I did get whanged on the kneecap by an unidentified piece of metal thrown up by a passing car. Swore I was shot for a minute there and it really felt good when it stopped hurting. No permanent damage...nice bruise, though. Here's a secret. Don't tailgate anyone, EVER, when you're on a bike. Car drivers will straddle obstacles in the road and if you're following too closely, you don't have time to react and avoid same. But I agree, I think you worry too much...
