  1. don't understand this if a building was involved in a town gas explosion the nature of town gas would mean that it would either be destroyed in the explosion or be so badly damaged as to be demolished as a result of the explosion

  3. It would be about 3 foot high and spread over a wide area?

It would depend on the condition of the air/gas mixture, and the volume of the gas cloud with respect to the volume of the space it was in.  It can be anything from a puff to total destruction.  Also funny things can happen.  Sometimes no fire results.  In a gas explosion in Chicago, the foundation was pushed out, but a basement window was still intact.  In San Francisco years ago a man tried to commit suicide by igniting a cloud of natural gas.  The building was severely damaged, but he was only moderately injured.  He was in the center of the explosion, so the forces did not cause him to be violently pushed in any direction
