  1. For preschool, definitely play-based.  They learn so much without realizing it because they are having so much fun.  My child's preschool also focuses on developing the 'whole-child' -- mental, physical, spiritual....  It's the best time window to lay a solid moral and educational background for our children.

  2. Depends on what you mean and what age.

0-4 a good environment would contain plenty of hands on materials that show how things fit like big piece puzzles and blocks. It should also have things like crayons and paper for them to use their imagination. The alphabet and color wheel should be displayed. Music of all appropriate types is needed *FYI classical music has been proven to speed up the neuro-net in a child's brain thus making it easier for them to learn* Ages 2-5 should have tracing materials and stencils. Also, interaction with other children is good for this age group. Children 0-2 usually aren't interested in social interaction, but 2-5 it is very important. The interaction is a teaching tool the learn from each other. And all should:

Have an opportunity to make choices

    Be treated as unique individuals

Learn to be part of a group

Become responsible for taking care of materials

    Be aware of the limits

Be with adults who will supervise

    Have cultural diversity teaching

Ages 5-... should have a quiet environment with all needed utensils such as paper colored pencils crayons ruler protractor etc..It should also include reference materials such as thesaurus , dictionary, and even encyclopedias.
